Can I use hydraulic brake levers with mechanical calipers?

By Crankworthy · Published · Updated

No

No. A mechanical caliper is pulled by a cable and a hydraulic lever pushes fluid — there is nothing to connect them. Keep the lever and caliper the same type; for hydraulic braking you need hydraulic calipers too.

A hydraulic lever has no cable to pull, and a mechanical caliper has no pistons for fluid to push, so the two cannot be joined. Two ways to move the padsMechanical: the lever pulls a cablelevercable armHydraulic: the lever pushes fluidleverpistonsHydraulic lever, cable caliperlevercable arm
Amber is brake fluid. A hydraulic lever has no cable to pull, and a cable caliper has nothing for fluid to push — neither part has anywhere to connect the other. Schematic.

Why

A mechanical disc caliper has an arm that a steel cable pulls. A hydraulic lever has no cable at all — squeezing it pushes fluid down a hose to the caliper's pistons.

There is one niche exception: cable-actuated hydraulic calipers, which take a cable from a mechanical lever and convert it to hydraulic force at the caliper. They solve the reverse problem — a mechanical lever driving a hydraulic caliper.

Don’t buy: hydraulic levers for cable calipers
Instead: a complete hydraulic set — lever, hose and caliper together.

Bikes this applies to

From our research, these bikes come with cable-operated (mechanical) brakes. Going hydraulic on any of them means levers, hoses and calipers together.
